Preparations start early
Organizing our attendance at a Pride is always a beautiful experience. Ideally, we start about 6 months prior to Pride with the organization - to have enough time for organizational error. The size of the group is different every year and we're thankful for every helping hand.
In the preparation we have 3 main focuses:
Planning our attendance - signing up as a group to the demonstration: Do we have a market stand? What do we have to organize for that stand? Do we have a vehicle on the demonstration? When do we have to meet the Pride organizers for important informations? What are the shifts for people who want to help at the pride?
Merchandise: How should our t-shirts look? Where can we find the ones that are suitable for our values? What kind of stickers and bottons do we have? What kind of infomation do we want at the market stand?
Coordinating Mentees: When do we meet where? Is there a prior event like the balloon event, where they can get together earlier? Is our information clear and short, so our volunteers/mentors can tell their mentees what they need to know? Do we have multiple meeting points?
Close to the event
The days before the Pride:
In the week of Pride we're making sure that we all understand the plan and we give a briefing to the volunteers. That's also when we set up the market stand and organize the last things.
The day of the Pride:
Usually we meet earlier to fill the helium balloons and go to the Pride Parade as a group. We make sure that there are multiple meeting points so there's no one lost, since some people are in Zurich for the first time and they might not have mobile data to find the place themselves. At the Pride, we hand out t-shirts for mentees who don't own one yet. After the demonstration some of the mentees visit the market stand so we have some water ready and, if possible, also a docking station so they can charge their phones.
The days after Pride
Dismantling our stand is our first task. After that, we bring back the material to our storage and we reflect on things that should be coordinated better in the next year.
What makes the organization beautiful to me is to know that we were part in creating a good experience for mentees who sometimes never have been to a Pride and seeing them feel joy is one of the nicest things.

Lieben Gruss Hans Ueli
